Friday 13th August will see the start of the 2021/22 season of the English Premier League (EPL). It is set to be one of the most exciting and exhilarating seasons in a very long time. Not just because fans will be allowed back in full capacity in stadiums, but it is without a doubt known as one of the best and toughest leagues in the world for its competitive nature, eye-gushing players and managers on screen.
Top six
Manchester City, who are managed by Pep Guardiola, will be looking to defend their title and win back-to-back titles, just like they did in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 season. For the entire summer, they were linked with one of the best strikers in the world – Harry Kane. The situation seems to have calmed down with Kane posting on his social media that he ‘wouldn’t do anything to jeopardise the relationship’ he has with the fans and current club Tottenham Hotspur. Whilst he may not have transferred to Manchester City, another Englishman – Jack Grealish – the poster boy during the Euro 2020, did make a move to City of £100 million from Aston Villa. It could still be argued, however, that City are short up front as Aguero was sold on a free to Barcelona.
On the other side of the city, Manchester United, who came 2nd last season, 12 points behind champions City, have strengthened their team. Their two recent signings – Jadon Sancho from Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid – have long been followed by the hierarchy of United. Combined with Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Pogba, United are looking like a real force. We may well witness the ‘theatre of dreams’ really light up. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s approach and tactical side of his game is still questionable. This season will be a do-or-die season for him with the backing he has received.
Not too far from Manchester is Liverpool. The very charismatic and animated Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, will be expecting to challenge for the top spot. The hole Virgil van Dijk left when he was injured early on in last season was very visible – as they finished 3rd after a very difficult mid-season and a lot of injuries. The squad has not changed much from last season’s disappointment, as they managed to retain and fend off interest for Mohammad Salah, their talisman. Amid all the speculation, it is the same squad but hopefully fit to play.
Another German manager down in the capital city is Thomas Tuchel. He took charge of Chelsea after Frank Lampard got the sack. Tuchel managed to top off the season by winning the most prestigious European trophy – the Champions League – and started off with the Super Cup, after defeating Villareal 6-5 on penalties. However, one thing which was apparent when watching Chelsea was the lack of goals up front. This may not be a problem anymore, as Romelu Lukaku is returning to Chelsea. It is reported that Chelsea have paid £97.5 million to bring him back.
To the North of London, Tottenham Hotspur where Jose Mourinho was infamously sacked before a final. He was the man who they brought in to win trophies, but not given the opportunity to win one. Now they have Nuno Espirito Santos as manager and Fabio Paratici, Managing Director of Football. Firstly, if they have successfully kept their most valuable asset, Harry Kane, which looks increasingly likely, then this window will be successful regardless of anything. Secondly, Paratici has been busy since his appointment and attracted young talent into the club, showing the ambitious route the club is trying to take – he has signed Pierluigi Gollini, Cristian Romero and Bryan Salvatierra. With a potential move on the cards for Lautaro Martinez, Spurs are making serious moves to strengthen the club significantly. Nuno has the players to make a difference at the club and maybe remind them of what Pochettino did with them.
The ‘new’ addition to the top 6 are Leicester City, it usually is Arsenal, but I will get to that. Arguably everyone has a soft heart for them. They showed the world how to run a club with the fans and culture being central to their aims. Brendan Rogers has done a fantastic job since joining but the fact is that for the past two seasons, they have failed to finish in the top four. Their squad is not big enough to compete the whole season. Besides this, they won the FA Cup last season and recently beating Manchester City in the Community Shield. They will be looking to push and shove the hierarchy once again.
Special mentions
Back to Arsenal. Financially, they are a big club. But their demise has been well recorded. During this transfer window, they have signed defender Ben White for £50 million from Brighton. It will be interesting to see how long the Arsenal fans will last before turning away from him. He did win the FA Cup in his debut season, so he is aware of the expectation and bar he set himself.
Aston Villa have sold their biggest star and playmaker to City. Despite this, they have been active in the transfer market, reinvesting the money from Grealish in replacements. One of their own products, Ashley Young, has come back with more experience and trophies. They took Danny Ings from Southampton, their leading goal scorer. They managed to convince the fast-paced Leon Bailey from Bayern Leverkusen to join them on loan as well as the exciting Buendia from rivals Norwich. Expect Villa to upset a few.
Lastly, Leeds United. Their awaited return has been a goalscoring galore, on both sides of the pitch. Marcelo Bielsa, ‘El Loco’ (the crazy one), has lighted up the league with his high pressing, aggressive and attacking play. What everyone will be eagerly waiting to see is if they can continue with the same mentality and pace throughout the season.
The EPL will never disappoint in whatever circumstance. From top to bottom of the table, it will always be exciting, controversial and blistering with talent and results.
